Global Ties Arizona welcomed a multi-regional delegation for We the People: Religious Freedom, an International Visitor Leadership Program exploring religious liberty, interfaith cooperation, and pluralism in the United States.
The visit began with a Global Café featuring Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke, Rev. Monica Whitaker, Liam Julian of the Sandra Day O'Connor Institute, and moderator Kristin Allen, President & CEO of Global Ties Arizona. Together, they discussed the intersection of faith, civic engagement, and community collaboration.
Throughout the program, participants met with Arizona's legal, governmental, and faith leaders. The State Bar of Arizona shared insight into constitutional protections for religious freedom, while the Phoenix Police Department's Bias Crimes Unit discussed protecting religious expression, civil rights, and public safety.
Meetings with the Arizona Faith Network, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, Guru Nanak Dwara, and the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix highlighted how faith communities preserve their identities, serve their neighbors, and build understanding across traditions. Dr. Anastasia Psomiadi also led a workshop on interreligious diplomacy and cross-sector partnerships.
The delegation concluded its visit at the Heard Museum, connecting conversations about freedom and identity with the histories and contributions of Indigenous communities.
Special thanks to the State Bar of Arizona, Arizona Faith Network, Phoenix Police Department, Dr. Anastasia Psomiadi, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, Guru Nanak Dwara, the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix, the City of Surprise, and SPARK Surprise for making this program possible.
