RELIGIOUS CULTURAL MONUMENTS: PAINTED MOSQUE - TETOVO
The painted mosque is a religious cultural heritage, an important Islamic historical monument protected by law and one of the most recognizable symbols of the city of Tetovo.
It is one of the most beautiful buildings of Islamic culture in the wider region. What makes it unique is its rich painting, which represents one of the greatest artistic and decorative achievements of the Ottoman period in Macedonia.
Prayers are held in the Painted Mosque and it is open to Muslim believers, however as a famous religious tourist destination it is visited daily by a large number of tourists.
One of the most significant and certainly the most recognizable symbols of the city of Tetovo is the Painted Mosque, which is located near the city center, on the right bank of the Pena River. Its original name was Aladza (basma, colorful cotton), and in the 19th century it received the name Pasha’s Mosque, after its restorer, Abdurahman Pasha. What makes it unique is its rich painting, which represents one of the greatest artistic and decorative achievements of the Ottoman period in Macedonia. According to legend, 30,000 egg whites were used to preserve the vibrancy of the colors used in the decoration.
